Coloray
Coloray – a name that most likely will ring bells in the ears of those who have been paying attention lately. As the newly-founded project by Tilburg-based DJ, producer, singer and graphic designer, Raynor de Groot, infuses powerful, unpolished sound aesthetics with relentless energy.
Starting off as somewhat of an experimental studio session, earlier this year, the venture aligns his strong backbone in music production as part of the Tunnelvisions duo, with his affection for retro-futuristic sound ecstatics and background in songwriting and vocal work. The world first got to know Coloray via his collaboration with Eagles & Butterflies. ‘Can’t Stop’ became a dancefloor anthem, getting played by underground darlings like Four Tet and Hunnee, to mainstream powerhouses like Dixon, Ame, Solomun, Adriatique and many more. The track ended up topping the charts, staying at the first place on Beatport months on end, getting chosen by Pete Tong as ‘Essential New Tune’ and staying on top of the Shazam charts in Ibiza for months on end.
His debut EP, titled ‘Real Life Cinema’, Coloray’s six-track debut EP contains a comprehensive body of work that demonstrates this unique assembly of past and present. With the debut single ‘Stand Up Straight’ landing on Intercept – the record label Coloray spearheads – followed by the full EP release on Atomnation, the package displays his artistic evolution, where captivating lyrics, throbbing bass line arrangements and raw vocals dictate the pace of things.
The project was a huge succes, with the sound making way for a rawer aesthetic on modern day dancefloors. ‘In Your Mind’ was eventually selected as the soundtrack for ‘Control Z’, a new Latin American Netflix original.
Coloray then went on to expand his horizons, with the release ‘Gazing Eyes’ on Innervisions thundering dancefloors as part of their Secret Weapons compilation. As a collaborator, Coloray keeps on searching for new ventures. Next to his Tunnelvisions collaboration, he has collaborated with Toto Chiavetta as Totoray and has many collaborations in the works.
Now, the multidisciplinary artist is ready to take it to the next level. With is upcoming EP on Permanent Vacation and a soon to be announced audiovisual music concept ‘Future Static’ on Intercept he’s about to take the world by storm, with a new audiovisual live show at the core of it all. Genres are no longer defining as his sound is expanding to ambient, EBM, techno, house, and disco. Combined with his experience as an art director and designer, Coloray’s mission is clear: become the genre-bending, multidisciplinary artist of the future.
